WA-HOOOOOO!
Apr. 14th, 2004 10:24 pmTonight, I became an author. A published author. An author, motherfucker, an author!
I don't know why I'm so buzzed about this. The new issue of the Whetstone, FSC's art and literary journal, just came out and a story I submitted is in it! I just can't get over the fact that there is an actual publication with a story of mine with my name printed across the top of the page. I must concede that part of the excitement may stem from the two small glasses of wine while taking advantage of a huge spread of snacks.
The Whetstone staff hosted a small party to celebrate the release of the new issue, with a big snack table and everything. And yes, there were a couple of bottles of wine there, and I partook a little bit. Fuck, if there's a night for a bit of liquid celebration, I felt, this was it.
The whole thing-- the gathering-- it was just a lot. Almost too much to handle. Yeah, I know, I wasn't looking forward to it last night. But I wound up staying for pretty much the entire length of the party. There was a poetry reading and general mingling. I only knew maybe 3 of the people there, and a fourth (one of the editors) introduced herself to me.
After the whole thing, I had to talk to my dad about something. I called him on the phone, told him about the Whetstone, let him know what happened, and I promised to grab him a copy when the campus' main supply hits the stands on Friday. Speaking of which, I'm gonna be grabbing copies for a few readers of this journal that I know will be interested.
From where, I went to the Book n Bean. The poetry reading, combined with... something, I dunno, maybe the thrill of my story being published, maybe the wine, gave me a huge wave of inspiration to write. I came up with a story idea, sat down at the Book n Bean, and wrote out the entire thing (a little over 1300 words or so) while I was there. With some editing, it'll probably make a fine submission for next year (although if there's any demand for it, I might post it here).
Speaking of next year, I'm going to be joining the Whetstone staff. I'd have joined this semester, but my schedule combined with various family problems would have made it difficult. Besides, joining up halfway through the semester would have felt like cheating, like I was just trying to get my name in there. But I will be joining next year. The experience will be good for me.
Man, I just feel fuckin' incredible tonight. Lori at the Book n Bean said I was giggling at one point. Sure, knowing my luck, at some point tonight someone will say something to kill my buzz, but I don't care. I'm riding the wave while I got it.
Bit of an Edit: I forgot to mention earlier... one thing that kinda buzzed me a bit was the Literary Editor asking me and a couple of the other writers to sign her copy of the Whetstone. That was damn cool.
