Well, I've finally managed to pick up a couple of Legend of the Five Rings Samurai Edition starter decks. And I learned the hard way that those boxes are frickin' huge. Has anyone else seen these things? I mean, sure, there's a picture on the website, but it doesn't properly convey the fact that the deck boxes are about the size of a DVD 'keep case.' Fortunately, I should be able to have at least one deck ready by GenCon, although I'm shooting for two (Dragon and Scorpion).
That said, though, it really sucks that I'm not going to be given the chance to participate in the Samurai Edition release event and get a chance at winning the katana. But the guy who ran the Tomb of the Unknown Fanboy, at the time he closed, was sitting on a promo pack for a SE release and didn't say anything to the few L5R players in town. And like everything else in the store, it vanished into thin air the moment he decided to close up shop. And also, our usual tourney store in Butler isn't running tournaments for the moment because the guy who runs them has some sort of beef with the rules changes.
So I've checked, and there isn't a store any closer than a three-hour drive from my house that's going to be running tourneys at all (not counting any stores running tournaments that aren't listed in the official database). I think some folks are trying to build a playgroup in Pittsburgh, and the three of us here are going to make an attempt at getting some folks interested down at the local card store. And then the day will come when we tell the young'ins of how in our day if we wanted to play L5R against other people we had to beat 'em until they were so dizzy they'd play any game thrust into their hands.
And now, for the request for help mentioned in the subject...
A friend of mine who lives in Bethlehem, PA is being thrown out of her place because of a ridiculous disagreement with the guy she's been staying with. Does anyone happen to be or happen to know somebody who lives relatively close to there who'd be able to take her in? She'd be able to help out on rent if need be (as far as I know), and I'd help her myself but I'm simply not able to do so right at the moment. Can anyone offer any help, here?
