Starting to warm up, here...
Feb. 22nd, 2007 03:42 amI got around to editing that story. I think it will work a lot better with the main character as a peasant than as a samurai as originally planned.
On an unrelated note, you can tell it's spring where I am because a couple of the old steps in front of my house always disintegrate just a little bit more when the snow thaws.
We left off with the characters catching their breath after the battle with the Neverborn Shadow and Derek the cult's leader. Joseph's spirit materialized, carrying Father John's clothing and allowing the Ulgan to slip off to the side to get dressed again (as he'd stripped down for Chameleon Skin; John's player couldn't make it so we just used that to explain away his missing what came next).
Steve and Rudolf debated Derek's final fate; Steve wanted to take him to a hospital while Rudolf just wanted to finish him off, given that he was running a cult that was apparently in at least some way centered around human sacrifice. Joseph explained to them the cult's methods (in the process introducing himself to those who didn't know him); that they attracted kids who felt betrayed and abandoned, and always found one who 'truly' understood what it was to be hollow and empty inside for the sacrifice to turn him into The Orphan.
The question came up, though... if that's how Jack was made, then who made him? After all, Prometheans don't just... happen. At least, not as far as any of them knew (especially Rudolf, who doesn't even believe he's a Promethean at all).
Almost as if waiting for that moment, the Ulgan that Jack spoke with before came out, screaming about ruined plans. He threw a huge tantrum about how he'd put so much work into building up the cult, moving it from city to city, all to learn more about humanity through their interactions with the Neverborn Shadow's followers. (It's a real shame that Father John's player couldn't be there for this, as I'd planned the scene to parallel the Ulgan's own method's with Father John's whole "pretend to be a priest to see how religion affects people" bit) And at one point, he recognized Joseph... his creator. Joseph was extremely surprised. He'd only been following the Shadow and had no clue that a Promethean was behind the cult, let alone one of his own progeny.
The Ulgan ranted and raved about his ruined plans and how he'd have to start all over, and during all of this Jack achieved a couple of his Milestones... 'Resolve the issues with the cult that created him' and 'Learn more about the sort of person he once was.' Joseph took off in a panic as Jack attacked the unnamed Ulgan.
Ander watched the fight, getting the feeling that there was something right about seeing creator and progeny interact like this.
The Ulgan attempted to get away (or was possibly just going after Joseph), and Steve held Jack back long enough to give him a head start. Ander suggested that Steve stay out of it, and so the Frankenstein let him go and wandered back towards the van. Jack's creator, at this point, realized he couldn't run... and he just said that he'd let Jack do what he wished to him. Jack told him that he'd let him go this time but if he heard about his activities again, he'd kill him.
While all this was going on, Ander was presumably checking on Derek as he covered his mouth and nose with his hand and smothered him (much in the style of what Giles did at the end of Buffy Season 5). He finished him off and carried his body back to the van, plans in mind for the dead meat.
As Jack turned to leave, Rudolf came up and just started shooting the Ulgan. Now he was willing to fight back. Joseph came back and actually tried to tackle him to the ground as between Jack and Rudolf they killed the Ulgan (as near as they could tell) and threw his remains in the bonfire.
They headed back towards the van, Joseph shared a few words with Rudolf and Jack on the nature of the Promethean condition and becoming human. He left them with his contact information and took off on his motorcycle.
Rudolf and Jack came back to the van to find Ander explaining to Steve that he wished to perform the generative act on Derek's remains to give his essence a chance to redeem itself in a kharmic way. All they'd have to do is find the bodies of some more people needing a chance at redemption. Rudolf and Steve disagreed with the notion, partially due to the fact that what woke up would not necessarily be Derek. Ander's dead set (no pun intended) on it, and Rudolf agreed that he wouldn't stop Ander as long as he got to be part of it just to be in the loop.
Jack, still reeling from everything he'd been through and quietly swearing he'd never ruin another life by creating someone one like himself, meditated for Elpis to get a glimpse of where to go next. He got a vision of setting himself up on a blind date over the internet.
We left off about there-ish, with the Throng's business in Waco taken care of and the possibility of a breather and some downtime should they wish it before moving on to Chandler, Oklahoma.
