Something that really concerns me
Oct. 14th, 2004 04:31 amI meant to mention this in my previous post about Night Lair, but never got around to it. I was thinking of just letting it slide, but I have to get it off my chest.
At the last game, someone brought a foam sword and shield (obviously intended for LARPing D&D) and started messing around with it. Naturally, at the start of the game, someone mentioned that even prop weapons aren't supposed to be allowed. After all, LARPs sometimes get intense and stuff happens-- hell, it's one of the basic rules of Live-Action RolePlay in the books. Well, the ST's said that they were allowing little stuff like that as long as it wasn't being used.
I'm worried about the presence of it at all.
Not to make blanket statements about types of LARPers, but we've got a lot of extremely immature high school-age players. Some of them can't even be trusted not to throw twinkies and soda cans at each other. The guy who originally brought his stuff wasn't one of these players, but I really don't think he himself is the most responsible roleplayer.
What I worry about is that the more immature players are going to start bringing Nerf bats or something and start clubbing each other in combat. Then somebody's going to get hurt. And then there's going to be the big flushing sound as the whole thing gets sucked down the toilet.
Basic rules of LARPing aside, I really think they should know better than to allow prop weapons, given our player base. I know at least a few of those kids are going to start bringing stuff from home that they'll claim is harmless but then somebody's going to get whacked with a foam bat and fall down some stone steps or something.
I'm definitely going to mention my concerns to the ST's at the game. After all, I'm a Narrator, part of my job is to point this shit out. I normally reserve comments like these for Friends-only posts, but I've got no problem saying in a public post here that if within the next few games we've got three or four morons running around hitting people with foam bats, then I might have to take a break from the game.
Every LARP... and I mean EVERY LARP I've heard of that went all to hell started its downward spiral with the introduction of weapons, lethal or otherwise, as props. And if we're going to have a bunch of idiots waving prop weapons around on a regular basis, then I don't think I want to be a part of it.

Date: 2004-10-14 02:43 am (UTC)I definitly agree about the prop weapons. Especially since we're in a public place. What happen when someone starts pointing a fake gun at someone, and a drunk college student thinks it's real?

Date: 2004-10-14 03:03 am (UTC)I keep telling myself 'it could be worse,' (after all, it could be-- I heard about a LARP where someone actually brought a chainsaw) but there reaches a point where the words lose all meaning.
Actually, while I'm here...
