I'm just gonna keep this short, sweet, and simple. There was an L5R sealed deck0 tourney at the FLGS on Saturday afternoon. I wound up winning, much to my surprise. Especially since the final match was played against someone who got a very good draw and happened to draw a clan that he was generally very experienced at playing. I, in turn, was playing a completely different deck from my usual style and got a terrible draw. Yet I barely managed to squeak by with a victory and I won a sword for my trouble. It feels good, though. I fucking earned that sword.
Anyhow, wanted to pass that along.
0-- Instead of our usual decks, we drew clans out of a hat and got a starter and a couple of boosters to build a deck with.

Date: 2011-01-17 03:45 pm (UTC)The only way to get better is to keep playing. I don't know if you go so far as to read strategy articles (or if there are any), but all the reading in the world won't help someone who isn't playing. It's great that you've hung in there-- you should be proud of yourself.
Sorry, I feel like I'm patting you on the head or something. It's been about a year since I've won a Magic tournament, and close to as long since I've been in the top match in the final round. I'm a scrub-a-dub :(

Date: 2011-01-21 10:46 pm (UTC)Most of Shomo's playstyle, particularly when he's playing Crab (which he was -- it's usually his main clan and the son of a bitch just happened to draw them out of the hat for our sealed deck), is based on the notion that there's a level of force against which no amount of tactics can succeed. I, however, managed to keep him just short of that level of force for long enough to win.
Half my problem with Constructed is that I actually kind of like playing decks that are difficult to win with. I'd rather win than lose, sure. But you remember, I was a Johnny player back in the day. I like seeing the gears turn in the machine. I'd rather labor over a crank making the machine work than just turn it on with a key and wander off to make a sandwich. There's nothing wrong with playing a deck that pretty much runs itself, but it's just not how I roll. Or flop, as the case may be.
