Writing and gaming and such
Apr. 20th, 2011 03:11 amSo, first off, I'm enjoying the iPad thus far. It's served pretty well for what I need it to be. I've tried one or two apps for writing, but as I mentioned before I'm not quite entirely ready to abandon the Palm just yet -- the convenience of having a pocket-sized device is just too much, even if it's a little outdated. But having a portable PDF and ebook reader is actually a lot nicer than I'd expected. For gaming books and such, books I'm likely to be flipping through to find something in the middle on a regular basis, I prefer a physical book. But if I'm simply reading from point A to point B -- especially if I'm likely to be doing something else and juggling the reading at the same time -- it's a lot easier than managing a bookmark just to set a paperback down for a couple of minutes. (And even despite that, some stuff I'd just prefer to have in a physical format regardless for some reason or another.)
While continuing to deal with assorted home and family issues, I've been doing my best to stay in a decent writing groove whether it's brainstorming for gaming things or working on stories. I've got a short story I'm currently revising with plans to submit to a magazine that should be taking submissions this summer. I'm also starting work on a novella for a publisher that's put out a call for anthology submissions.
I wouldn't mind doing some more professional gaming writing, but I'm honestly not sure which publishers are looking for writers and I'm reluctant to seriously consider writing for a company/system I'm not particularly familiar with. I probably could be doing more to look, but the best source I know for this sort of thing is RPG.net and quite frankly I don't find the signal-to-noise ratio there very endearing. But I'll sort something out or I won't. It's just how it is.
So far I've managed to get my Pathfinder group together for a single session -- not really enough happened to be worth doing a write-up just yet, as there was a lot of stumbling and last-minute adjustments and such for that first session. Because someone whose opinion I value asked me very nicely, I decided to give Flakey McFlakerson a try on a probationary basis. I still took him aside and made it clear that I expect him to show up regularly and let me know if he has to bail for a session).
That said, at the start of the next session I'm going to give everyone a warning about their assorted gadgets. I don't mind people using iPads and laptops and such to reference gaming-related PDFs, check online references and such. Hell, I use both my iPad and Palm at sessions that I'm running. But let's just say, though, that I've been given the impression that I need to make a choice between fighting with the devices for my players' attention or threatening to disallow them outright.
They'll get one warning before I tell them that if they want to fuck around on the computer to do it at home. And anyone that wants to argue that policy with me will also be asked to do that at home.
Not sure what else I've got to share, really. Is there anything I've left out?
